Gender Comparison of Factors Affecting the Suicide Ideation of Adolescents - Based on the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, 2019 -

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study attempted to determine the difference in factors affecting the suicidal ideation by gender among adolescents.
Methods: This study used data from the 15th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey(2019) of the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention(KCDC). The data used were analyzed using the SPSS Ver. 25.0 program as a weighted composite sample analyse.
Results: 9.3% of male students and 17.4% of female students were found to have experienced suicidal ideation. Male students' ideation of suicide were influenced by depression (OR=5.61), experience of violence (OR=2.35), stress (OR=2.08), relative residence (OR=1.99), drug experience (OR=1.92), sexual experience (OR=1.35), drinking experience (OR=1.27), subjective health recognition (OR=1.27), dormitory residence (OR=1.26), economic unsatisfaction (OR=1.17), sleep unsatisfaction (OR=1.14), age (OR=0.88) and BMI (OR=1.07). On the other hand, female students' ideation of suicide were influenced by depression (OR=4.77), drug experience (OR=4.13), experience of violence (OR=2.27), stress (OR=2.06), sexual experience (OR=1.33), smoking experience (OR=1.32), drinking experience (OR=1.32), subjective health recognition (OR=1.31), age (OR=0.83), economic unsatisfaction (OR=0.83), BMI (OR=1.11), sleep unsatisfaction (OR=1.10), and academic performance (OR=1.06).
Conclusions: It has been found that there are differences in factors that affect between male and female students' suicide ideation, so differentiated intervention and mediation are needed.
